Jan Mach and East Bohemia

Jan Mach is a Czech Fulbright candidate for next year. He invited me to come to visit him and his family for a weekend after reading my blog (passed to him by the Fulbright Commission in Prague, I presume). I thought it would be interesting to see next year's crop of exchange teachers and visit a new part of CZ, and it was!

He lives in a small village in East Bohemia, very close to the Polish Border. During the weekend, we managed to see many local sights. We started with Hradec Kralove, where he and Marketa (his wife) met me at the train station. Lovely town. We also saw Nachod, Hronov, some natural rock formations and Kudowa Zdroj, a spa town in Poland. Whew! Quite a lot for two days.

In danger of flooding starting the day I arrived in East Bohemia. The river is reeeaally close behind it and had overflowed to the yard. The water made it to the wall of the house but not inside, luckily. There were a lot of floods throughout the country at that time.

BUNKERS

There are a lot of these built near borders. Apparently the Czechs were prepared to defend themselves from German(?) invaders, but there was ultimately no fight afterall. I forget the reasons exactly.

Tasting the waters--Nothing as grand as Karlovy Vary, but nice in its own way.

Human bone display. We couldn't take out own pictures in here, but Jan Mach found some pictures on the internet and sent them to me. Trippy, isn't it? Perhaps a bit...morbid? It's normal here, apparently.
